The National Road Race Championships came to a close last weekend. The Hummingbirds International Cycle Club have so much to be proud of and to celebrate.
There are so many ways to measure success … some might argue that podium places is the measure. I believe that after this weekend we can easily say that a balance between wins, the joy of cycling and the love of family and supporters is the real measure. On the basis, we were an A+ this weekend.Sheldon getting ready for the road race. His outstanding performance was a factor in being selected for the National Team. SATURDAY INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL
On Saturday, a large number of cyclists gathered at the new extension of the Solomon Hochoy in the wet morning to compete in the individual time trial. You could feel the tension of competition rise as the race drew closer. The cyclists were spattered with mud from a not too perfect course. With the ramp in place, soon the event was underway and the fun began.
In the 70+, Joey was our first medal winner, a silver behind Ronald Peters.
In the 65 – 69, Peter H had the fastest time, capturing yet another national champions title. In the same event, Peter A managed a third place finish.
In the 60 – 64, Vernon had a great start but crashed in the mud at the turnaround point at the bottom of the course. Despite this crash, he still finished a close fourth.
In the 55 – 59, Martin did a fast ride to finish third. Peter S was a effort filled fifth.
In the 50 – 54, Steve was third.
In the 40 – 44, Robin was third, covering the required double of the distance of the previous categories.
In the Elite, Sheldon was 6th in a very competitive field.
This was a great overall result for the Hummigbirds. One gold, one silver and four bronze, with spirited showing from all of our cyclists!
SUNDAY ROAD RACE
What a difference a day makes. Sunday turned out to be sunny! We also had a larger contingent of supporters and cyclisys. There were purple and gold jerseys everywhere!
The start was staggered to allow the faster groups to go first, minimizing the possibility of slower riders tagging onto faster groups.
In the 70+, Joey one his second silver medal winner, finishing again behind Ronald Peters. Joey made a wrong turn on the course and this added to his challenges.
In the 65 – 69, Peter H paced to a 2nd place finish. he and Peter A were part of an early break but were joined by Jooefield who eventually went on to win gold. Peter A was caught on the last lap and managed a fourth place finish.
In the 60 – 64, Vernon did not start as a result of injuries from the previous day’s fall.
In the 55 – 59, Martin had mechanical troubles and dropped out. Peter S took a costly wrong turn and was a DNF.
In the 50 – 54, Steve also took a wrong turn and was a DNF.
In the 45 – 49, Marlon came out to race but was really challenged by the course and eventually dropped out.
In the 40 – 44, Robin was a gutsy third. He was separated from the front runners but pushed on to get onto the podium.
In the Elite, Sheldon was 3rd. This, by his own account was his most treasured national championship result as the course and competition tested him to the max. He was in a break that never got caught by the pack. So tough was this event that only 10 of the original 23 starters were able to complete the race.
This was again a great overall result for us – One silver and two bronze. Lots of encouragement to come back next week and do even better.
My personal highlight was the encouragement of all of the supporters and those doing the feeding and wetting of our cyclists. So nice to hear and feel the encouragement!!!
Lets go Hummingbirds!!
