Our Hummingbirds were on the line with riders from every category, every club and other West Indian islands, including cyclists from Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Antigua & Barbuda.
As a race essentially up and down the major highways, this was a speed event with the fastest elite cyclists completing the course in 1 hour and 38 mins. According to my calculations that’s an average speed of over 44 kph!
Thankfully none of the Hummingbirds were involved in a crash that occurred during the chase to catch the breakaway group on the way back up from Chaguanas. As many as 20 cyclists were involved in this incident.
The breakaway group of Alexander, Clarke and Elcock managed to stay away, preserving most of the two minute gap they established earlier in the race.
Sheldon finished with the chase group sprinting to catch the breakaway.
Martin was 8th in the Masters 50 – 59. This was a hotly contested category as the top four finishers were only a couple of minutes behind the elites.
In the Masters 60+, Peter H was 6th, again the pace was very high in this category with the top two placings faster than the 50 – 59. These Masters are fast!
It is encouraging to see such a large field and a large contingent of Hummingbirds on the line. Congrats to all of our cyclists.
We are looking forward to seeing the Hummingbirds on the line again, for the next Road Series Event on January 24th
